Journey to East Berlin - the Wall, the GDR, and the Cold War
The tour lasts 2 hours
Available in Italian
Description
This tour follows the route that led from West Berlin to East Berlin, starting from Checkpoint Charlie, the most famous border crossing of the Cold War and one of the most emblematic places of the divided city.
From here, a journey into East Germany's Berlin will begin, taking us beyond the most well-known images of the Cold War. Starting from the place where the city's division was staged in front of the world, we will enter the daily life of the GDR, amidst state control, propaganda, and personal stories.
We will talk about daily life in East Germany, the control exercised by the state, the Stasi, and the difficulties that marked people's lives.
Crossing the city center, we will follow the traces of socialist Berlin, among propaganda, architecture, and urban transformations.
The route concludes at the Palace of Tears (Tränenpalast), one of the most intense places of divided Berlin, where family and friends said goodbye before separating across the border. Here, it is possible to visit the museum for free, which allows you to see up close documents, objects, and testimonies related to the themes discussed during the tour. The visit is optional and takes about half an hour.
A journey to understand what it meant to live in a divided city and under the dictatorship of the GDR.

Native Italian speaker, living in Berlin for 17 years, full-time tour guide. My goal is to share history, knowledge, culture, and anecdotes to help you truly understand and appreciate this city, which I'm truly in love with. My tours are structured like a journey and designed to complement each other, without overlapping in stops or content. I recommend starting with "Berlin, Modern Capital – Places of 20th-Century History," the introductory tour dedicated to the major transformations that have marked the city over the last century. The other tours delve into specific themes of Berlin's history and identity: the Cold War, the GDR, and the Wall; the historic center; street art; and the capital's most iconic neighborhoods. During the tour, you can also ask me for practical tips on museums, festivals, neighborhoods, restaurants, nightlife, and anything else that can help you experience Berlin more consciously.
