Bolzano Then and Now – Urban Stories Between the Middle Ages and Modernity

Julius Perathoner was the mayor of Bolzano from 1895 to 1922. On the 100th anniversary of his death, this walking tour explores the historic centre with a special focus on the period when Bolzano began to develop into a modern city.

We will discover medieval Bolzano, with its squares, narrow streets and historic buildings, but also the city around 1900: a time of change, new transport links, growing tourism and major urban development.

The tour is not limited to the Perathoner era: references to Bolzano’s later urban development will help explain how the city changed over the course of the 20th century and which traces of these transformations are still visible today. Along the way, we will also explore a few lesser-known corners beyond the usual tourist routes.

A walk to better understand Bolzano today: a city between North and South, shaped by history, trade, culture and different identities.
