Alternative Street Art & Subculture Day & Night Free tours

  • 2 hours and 45 minutes
  • English

Description

Berlin has two faces. Choose your shift:

DAY — Street art, squats and underground history from Kreuzberg to Friedrichshain.

NIGHT — Kreuzberg, DIY communities, murals, graffiti, canals, clubs.

These are two different routes.

BERLIN’S UNDERGROUND. NOT BERLIN’S INSTAGRAM.

No Haus Schwarzenberg. No Holzmarkt 25. No predictable “Alternative Berlin” Google checklist.

New to GuruWalk. Not new to Alternative tours. I created the original tour concept 20 years ago and spent 25 years inside Berlin’s alternative scene—running bars, underground clubs and warehouse galleries.

Discover the origins of West Berlin’s alternative culture—from Cold War isolation and counterculture.

Visit a DIY riverside community on the Spree, where homes and shared spaces are built from reclaimed Berlin materials and meet its colony of seven cats.

Discover Berlin’s street art and graffiti culture—from huge murals and rooftop pieces to crew tags, political graffiti and the street codes used by the left and Antifa.

See a Kreuzberg music venue frequented by David Bowie and Iggy Pop. Hear about bars beneath manholes, elderly punks and local street politics.

The Day Shift includes a former squatted hospital, the Treehouse beside the Wall, Jamaican reggae beach culture, Berghain’s exterior and a bombed railway depot reborn as an alternative playground.

The Night Shift follows the Spree past DIY communities and giant murals into the canal club district as the bars open and Berlin comes alive.

NO COLOURED UMBRELLAS. NO HEADSETS. NO CROWDS.

Maximum 12 guests. No transport ticket is needed.

The best things in Berlin aren’t sold. They’re discovered.

Guiding since 2026
I joined GuruWalk in 2026, but I have been creating and leading alternative tours for 20 years. I created the original Alternative tour concept in Berlin when I founded Alternative Berlin Tours in 2006, followed by Alternative Hamburg Tours in 2013—long before “alternative tours” became recognised as a tour category. I’ve spent more than 25 years inside Berlin’s alternative scene, not only as a guide but as someone who has lived and worked within it. I’ve run bars, underground clubs and galleries inside abandoned warehouses. I’ve watched neighbourhoods change, squats disappear, graffiti movements develop and forgotten industrial spaces become internationally famous cultural venues. My tours combine Berlin’s history with personal experience. I don’t simply point at murals or repeat information you can find on Google. I explain the people, politics, rivalries and hidden codes behind the city’s graffiti, music, nightlife and alternative culture. I also run street-art and graffiti workshops and lead tours covering subculture, migration, gentrification, crime, politics, club culture and Berlin nightlife. My groups are limited to 12 guests. This allows us to explore narrow backstreets, courtyards and neighbourhood spaces that large umbrella groups cannot visit respectfully—and gives you the freedom to ask questions, exchange ideas and properly understand the city.
