This is the only regular free tour of Alcalá de Henares conducted in English — and it covers one of Spain's most historically significant cities in a way that actually makes sense to international visitors.

Alcalá has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. But long before Cervantes was born here, long before Cardinal Cisneros built one of the world's first universities, this city was Complutum — a thriving Roman settlement whose streets, mosaics, and stories are still being uncovered today.

Over 90 minutes, we'll walk from Roman foundations to Renaissance glory: a medieval porticoed street with a hidden multicultural past, a hospital that has been running continuously since 1483, one of the finest Renaissance facades in Spain, and the exact spot where Cervantes entered the world.

I'll share the history that the plaques don't tell you — including the five years Cervantes spent as a slave in North Africa before writing the book that changed literature forever.

Free tours don't have a fixed price. At the end, each person contributes to the guide the amount they consider fair based on their satisfaction. As a guideline, Guruwalk recommends between €15 and $50 per participant.
