Description
Death in 19th Century Murcia: A Journey to the City of the Dead
Delve into one of the most surprising routes in Murcia and discover how the great epidemics of the 19th century transformed the city and the lives of its inhabitants. In this guided tour, we will explore the Cemetery of Jesus, the main cemetery in Murcia and a site declared a Cultural Heritage, where art, history, and memory come together in a unique setting.
Through its impressive pantheons and funerary monuments, we will learn about the beliefs, customs, and mentality of 19th-century society. We will contemplate works by prominent Murcian architects such as Pedro Cerdá, author of the Royal Casino of Murcia, and Justo Millán, architect of the Romea Theater, as well as admire examples of neoclassical, eclectic, and modernist architecture.
During the tour, we will also visit the graves of illustrious Murcian figures whose lives left a profound mark on the city's history.
A different experience to discover the other side of Murcia: the city of silence, memory, and funerary art, where each tomb hides a story waiting to be told.
