Recommend joining this tour on your first day in Beijing — it’s a great way to get an overview of Beijing’s old city, from local hutongs and the Central Axis to Tiananmen, before exploring it in more depth.

Why I Love Exploring Beijing by Bike
Having lived in Beijing for decades, I believe the best way to experience the city is by bike.
Beijing’s old city is too large to explore entirely on foot, while traffic can make traveling by car slow and disconnected. But when I ride through the old city, I feel like I’m part of everything around me, while at the same time watching the city slowly unfold in front of me.
In the hutongs, I see elderly neighbors sitting outside, chatting and playing cards. A few streets away, office workers hurry to work. Then I turn out of a narrow hutong onto a wide avenue, and suddenly, a completely different Beijing appears — busy, modern, and full of energy.
When I cycle past Tiananmen, I still feel proud to be Chinese. This is the Beijing I’d love to show you — not just its famous landmarks, but the city and everyday life in between.

Why This Route?
We start at the northern end of the UNESCO-listed Beijing Central Axis, exploring quiet hutongs and everyday local life beyond the busy main streets.
Then we climb to the highest point of the Central Axis for a panoramic view of the Forbidden City and old Beijing, before cycling south toward Tiananmen — where the People’s Republic of China was founded in 1949. We’ll ride past Tiananmen Square and along Chang’an Avenue, the grand boulevard used for China’s National Day parades.
Finally, we finish in Wangfujing, one of Beijing’s busiest shopping districts — bringing us from quiet old neighborhoods to the heart of modern Beijing, all in one ride.

Ending Point — Wangfujing
We’ll finish the tour in Wangfujing, one of Beijing’s most famous shopping districts.
It’s a great place to stay after the tour, with plenty of restaurants for lunch or dinner and shops selling everything from clothes and shoes to Chinese and international electronics.
You’ll also find a large store specializing in high-quality Chinese arts and crafts — a great place to look for well-made souvenirs, with a wide variety of traditional Chinese products to take home.
And if you’re curious about modern China, you can also explore some of the latest Chinese technology here, including Huawei cars and Chinese-made robots.
With excellent subway connections, it’s easy to continue exploring Beijing from here.

Forbidden City Tour
Of course, Echo isn’t only about adventure! I’m also fascinated by history and traditional Chinese architecture. If that sounds like your kind of thing, you’re very welcome to join my Forbidden City Tour too.

Guiding since 2025
Hi! I’m Echo, a licensed tour guide born and raised in Beijing. Before becoming a guide, I worked as a programmer. But my real passion has always been travel and storytelling. I’ve written many long travel blogs about my journeys, covering places such as India, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Indonesia, where I explore culture, history, and everyday life through writing and photography. For many years, I shared the world with Chinese readers. Now, I want to share China with the world. As a guide, I try to go beyond simply showing places. I want to help travelers understand the logic behind the spaces they walk through — how history, architecture and everyday life are connected. I’m still exploring my own way of guiding, and I’d love to explore Beijing together with you :) By the way, I also offer private and customized tours, including multi-day experiences in Beijing. Feel free to reach out if you’d like a more personalized itinerary :)
