Discover Colonia del Sacramento with a local guide born and raised in the city on a 2 hours free walking tour that combines history, Uruguayan culture, mate and fishing.

Starting in Plaza Mayor, we will explore the Historic Quarter and discover how the long rivalry between Portugal and Spain shaped the city. Along the way, we will visit places such as the City Gate, the old walls, Calle de los Suspiros, the ruins of the Convent of San Francisco and the Basilica, while talking about architecture, local legends and the history behind the streets.

But this tour is about more than landmarks.

Throughout the walk, Colonia becomes a gateway to understanding Uruguay: our traditions, culture, recent history, everyday life and the little things that make the country unique.

The most special moment comes by the River Plate, where we will slow down for a 30 minutes break. We will prepare mate, share a few fishing rods, try our luck from the shore and enjoy some time to talk, ask questions and experience a simple activity that locals genuinely enjoy.

This is not a fishing tour, and while we’ll definitely try our luck, catching a fish is never guaranteed. It is a shared moment by the river, designed to enjoy the peaceful rhythm of Colonia and connect with the group.

Questions are always welcome. The goal is not to memorize dates, but to leave with a better understanding of Colonia, Uruguay and the people who call it home.

I was born and raised in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay. This city has been part of my life for as long as I can remember, and the Historic Quarter has practically been my backyard. I studied tourism and developed a particular passion for history, culture, and the stories behind the places we visit. I’m naturally curious, I love meeting people from different parts of the world, and I’m always interested in hearing their stories too. I’m easygoing, talkative, and probably a little too passionate when a good historical story comes up. 😄 For me, being a guide is a way of sharing the place I call home and connecting with people from all over the world. Free tours don't have a fixed price. At the end, each person contributes to the guide the amount they consider fair based on their satisfaction. As a guideline, Guruwalk recommends between €15 and €50 per participant.
