Tour description

The Changing Of The Guards Ceremony at Buckingham Palace is iconic and seeing it up close is a once in a lifetime experience for many.

So why spoil it by having to stand for hours in the unpredictable British weather, amongst thousands of others, constantly fighting for the “best spot” only to discover  too late that your view is obstructed?

Take this FREE  (pay what you feel) walking tour with an expert guide who will take you to the “secret spots” (often hidden in plain sight) for unprecedented views of the ceremony. Much, smaller crowds, fewer or no barriers/fences or other obstructions, and an explanation of what is actual going on, so you can understand more of the traditions and pomp of the event as it unfolds in front of you.

GUARANTEED! to be within 10-15ft (3-4.5m) of the guards themselves, as they carry out this long standing tradition. Which traces its origins as far back as the late 17th century under the reign of William III and remains little changed since.

PLUS! this tour will also take you to the CHANGING OF THE HORSEGUARDS to see the mounted regiments of The Household Cavalry carry out their daily guard change and inspection. This is the best place in London to get that iconic photo with a guard in full regalia.

PLEASE NOTE:
All or part of the ceremony may be cancelled, altered or otherwise changed by Buckingham Palace at any time, often at short notice and often without explanation especially in inclement weather. I will do my utmost to give all participants the best experience possible but due to logistics of the ceremony,  the planned route may change, I will endeavour to keep the group informed of any changes if and when they occur.

The tour will also show you other famous London attractions and monuments such as:

  • Trafalgar Square
  • Nelsons Column
  • The National Gallery
  • Admiralty Arch
  • St James Palace
  • Buckingham Palace
  • Clarence House
  • Horseguards Parade
  • The Banqueting House
  • Downing Street

And more…

I was disappointed that the guide was late in arriving saying the ‘usual Monday morning delays’ were to blame. Then he wasn’t sure what access there would be to the Mall following yesterday’s marathon. From Trafalgar Sq to the Palace we had a two min hurried talk about a statue near Trafalgar Sq then a lot of hurried walking to catch up time. It was then decided we would not be able to access St James’s Palace to watch the horses and bands so the group were hurried on to another point. We left the group at this point and were sorry we had wasted the time walking to Trafalgar Sq and back to the Palace by which time it was packed with tourists and we couldn’t get anywhere near a viewpoint where we could see the guard change. I think the guide should have firstly been on time especially if he knows there are ‘the usual Monday morning’ delays and secondly he should be aware of the access to the Mall post marathon. In my opinion this tour should not have operated today as he stated from the outset that we wouldn’t be able to do parts of it. Very disappointing as we could have stood at the palace ourselves and seen much more. We done this tour two years ago and it was excellent which is why we booked to do it again. Unfortunately it fell far short of what we expected. I messaged the day before with a query which was not replied to. All in all very disappointing and we missed our only opportunity to see the changing of the guard. If the main parts of the advertised tour that people sign up to are not available then people should be informed so they can make a choice whether they still want to attend or not.

Super good tour with lots of information, great view of changing of the horse guards. Unfortunately we didn’t really see the normal guard change due to closures because of the London marathon, but still had lots of lovely views in the park and what we did see of the changing of the guards. Definitely recommend this tour!

Richard was lovely. Pointed out toilets for the kids on route. Braved the weather and we were rewarded with no-one around for changing of the guards and the band.

Cannot rate and recommend Richard highly enough! He was just amazing, from knowing the best places to stand and when to move, to see the best spots and have front line of sight, to being so personable and certainly not like he'd said all the information a million of times before, felt very friendly, very polished, so incredibly knowledgeable, very good with the kids, helping to get them to the front to see more. Just amazing!
