Free private tour through the Andalusian medina of Jerez

Jerez is world-renowned for its wines, horses, and flamenco, an intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO.

However, our city also boasts another lesser-known but equally important historical-artistic heritage, part of which I invite you to discover on a private and personalized tour, with a maximum of five people per visit: the great Andalusian medina of Šarīš (شريش) from the 8th to the 13th centuries, with winding and narrow streets among which were located its more than twenty mosques, and which was repopulated by Christians and a hundred Jewish families starting in 1267.

We will begin the tour by entering the old Muslim city through the space that was occupied by one of the main gates of the medina: the Seville gate, in front of the monumental cloister of the convent of Santo Domingo, with remains that could belong to the Andalusian period of Jerez. From there, we will delve into the beautiful and, in some cases, mysterious alleys that lead to the Jewish quarter and the six neighborhoods of the old town, San Marcos, San Juan, San Lucas, San Mateo, San Salvador, and San Dionisio.

Our tour will end at the Plaza del Arenal, a space that housed a large maqbara or cemetery from the Andalusian period, the largest of the two it had, and which we will reach through the beautiful Calle Pescadería, bordered by the wall and very close to the remains that are still preserved of the old Real or Marmolejo gate.
