My name is Gabriel Pech, journalist by profession, history buff and guide for 4 years in the city of Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico. I speak the Mayan language, and also English. For more than 10 years I have been promoting the use and customs of the Mayan culture in the state. It will be an honor to guide you in this beautiful colonial city called Mérida, a piece of paradise on the soil of Mexico. I am sure that you will enjoy this tour that aims to enrich and highlight the historical, cultural and recreational details of this beautiful city. On Sunday mornings we will visit the Lucas de Gálvez market to see the colorful fresh fruits of the region and the Sunday atmosphere.

Tour description

On this tour you will have the experience of cooking and eating the traditional dish for the Day of the Dead: PIB, a tamale that is cooked underground.

Before cooking this tamale, we'll go to the market to buy some ingredients and then cook this dish. This tamale is a flavor bomb: corn, lard, chiles, tomatoes, onions, pork and chicken, and local beans. It can also be vegetarian, so don't worry!
PIB: is a word of Mayan origin, which means “cooking underground” and is a deeply rooted method in Yucatan and especially in Mayan communities.
We will visit
The García Rejón Market
The Lucas de Gálvez Market
Eulogio Rosado Park
And our host's house to cook this dish.
This activity lasts about 4 hours and is the only low-budget cooking activity. Perfect for your budget!
Do you dare?
This tour costs $25 euros and includes the purchase of supplies, drinks such as horchata and hibiscus, and the PIB dish.
Book as soon as possible to live this experience.
