Tour description
Starting point: Praça Castro Alves in front of the Metha Glauber Rocha cinema, a place of resistance and celebration of Afro-Brazilian culture, the Centro Cultural de la Barraquinha is the ideal starting point. Installed in an old church, today it is a space of art, memory, and gatherings that honor the ancestry of black women, through the creation of the sisterhood of Our Lady of the Good Death, where the first candomblé terreiro in Brazil was born.
We walk through Praça Castro Alves, a tribute to the "poet of the slaves," a stage for Salvador's carnivals, with the parade of Afro, percussive, and afoxé blocks, where these blocks span generations resisting prejudice and showing where our street carnival culture is born.
We arrive at the Municipal Square, highlighting the Casa de Câmara e Cadeia, where several leaders of the main revolts that occurred in the city were imprisoned. Next to it is the Ladeira da Revolta dos Malês, the largest revolt of enslaved people in Brazil.
Finally, we will approach the Escola do Olodum, a cultural and educational center for Afro-descendants where we will review the importance of Carnival in the city. After three hours of touring, we will end the guided visit at the Cruz de San Francisco.
