Free Walking Tour of Coptic Cairo – Churches, Synagogue, and First Mosque

Discover Cairo's spiritual and multicultural heart with a stroll through the Coptic Quarter, one of the city's most fascinating and ancient places, where Christianity, Judaism, and Islam have coexisted for centuries.

During the tour we will visit:

• The Hanging Church, built on two towers of the ancient Roman Fortress of Babylon, constructed under the Emperor Trajan in the 2nd century.

• The Church of Abu Serga (Saints Sergius and Bacchus), one of the most moving sites in the neighborhood: inside is the cave where, according to tradition, the Holy Family took refuge and remained during the flight to Egypt. We will descend into the crypt to discuss this pivotal moment in Christian history.

• The Church of San Giorgio, linked to his imprisonment and martyrdom, where objects traditionally associated with his story are preserved.

• The Church of Santa Barbara, where her relics are kept and we will talk about the martyrs of the first centuries of Christianity.

• The Ben Ezra Synagogue, one of the most important Jewish sites in Cairo.

• We will see from the outside the Mosque of Amr Ibn al-As, the first mosque built in Egypt and Africa, symbol of the beginning of the Islamic period.

At the end of the tour, for those who wish, we will make a short optional stop in small local bazaars, spice shops and a papyrus factory, to also learn about traditional Egyptian crafts and perfumes.
