Helsinki Signature Tour: Art Nouveau and Moomins
- 1 hour and 30 minutes
- English and Russian
Description
A perfect opportunity to explore Helsinki unique Art Nouveau scene and find connections with Tove Jansson's beloved moomin world in Finnish history and culture. Crowned with the visit to the fabulous Jugend cafe with a spectacular whimsical Art Nouveau interior. The walk is tip-based, thank you so much :)
We start from the heart of Helsinki on the Senaatintori at the monument to tsar Alexander II close to the cathedral.
1. The North Harbour with its proliferation architecture styles.
2. Katajanokka headland, the cradle of the Finnish Art Nouveau, where Tove Jansson was born and grew up, her first memories influencing her art. Officially the first Art Nouveau building in Helsinki, actual inspiration for the moomin house.
3. Tove Jansson's house and Luotsikatu, the most beautiful street of Helsinki as voted by locals in the Finnish media.
4. Finnish Art Nouveau 'castles' of Katajanokankatu from Norma to Olofsborg.
5. Finnish nature as represented in architecture, from Kaupiaankatu to Kruunuvuorenkatu.
6. Tove Jansson's park and the huggable moomin statue, rather small but moomins are supposed to be tiny creatures :)
7. The South Harbour, walk through the open market and talk about traditional Finnish foods and crafts and their role in the moomin world.
8. The Esplanade, young Tove represented in bronze as a mermaid by her father Viktor Jansson. An optional brief detour to the Moomin Arabia shop to check it out.
9. Helsinki Jugend cafe crowns our tour, warm up and relax in a unique Art Nouveau interior with loads of good coffee and great selection of iconic 'pulla' buns (korvapuusti etc.).
