Great World to Modern Shanghai: Golden Age Walk
- 3 hours
- English
Description
Before Shanghai had skyscrapers, it had the Great World. In the 1930s, this was where the city came to see and be seen—acrobats, opera singers, gamblers, and dreamers packed its halls every night. It was the beating heart of the “Paris of the East.”
But the Great World didn‘t disappear. It was preserved, relocated, and reimagined—just like the city around it. This 3-hour walk starts at its doorstep and follows the story of how old Shanghai’s glamour became today‘s skyline: the Shanghai Concert Hall’s remarkable move, the rise of elevated highways, the grandeur of Huaihai Road, the lanes of the former French Concession, and a finish in Fuxing Park as the city lights come on.
This is not a tour of old buildings. It‘s the story of how Shanghai became the “Paris of the East”—and what it chose to become instead.
