A Historical Tour of Toulouse Through its Political History
- 2 hours
- English and French
Description
“Red, bloody, tragic, bristling with war monuments and hostile keep—a city whose long history of fanaticism, hatred, and suffering has shaped its crimson face and its tumultuous, passionate soul…”
Behind the “Pink City” lies a “Red City.” In the 1920s, the poet and author Armand Praviel described Toulouse’s tumultuous past in these terms.
Come discover the clang of weapons, the cries of revolt, and the sound of boots that echoed through its streets: from Toulouse’s St. Bartholomew’s Day massacre to the revolutionary battles, from popular and student uprisings to the Resistance against the Nazi occupiers.
Guide: François
Guiding since 2026A resident of Toulouse by choice, I’ve been walking the streets of the “Pink City” for a decade. I am a historian by training, having studied at the École Normale Supérieure, earned my agrégation in history, and defended my dissertation in contemporary history at the University of Toulouse–Jean Jaurès.
I have been teaching in higher education for eight years, and I want to continue this work of sharing knowledge beyond the walls of the university, right here on the streets of Toulouse.
A historian’s perspective is, above all, a cautious one: no fanciful anecdotes or hearsay, but presentations grounded in history—which is rich and incredible enough on its own!
