Lion's Head Sunset Hike with a Local Guide
- 4 hours
- English and French
Description
Sunset from the top of Lion's Head, with the Atlantic on one side and the whole city on the other. Then we walk down by headlamp as the lights come on in town.
I'm Lao, a registered Western Cape guide (WC16708). I worked for six years as a wildlife and ecology guide in Zimbabwe, so on the way up I'll tell you about the plants, the rock and the history of the mountain, plus tips for the rest of your trip.
This is a mountain hike, not a city walk. We set off earlier than most people, so there's time to stop and no rush at the end. Near the top there's a steep, rocky section with ladders and chains. At the top you can join the crowd on the summit, or we stop at a quieter spot just below.
Good to know:
- About 4 hours, 5.5 km return, 350 m climb
- You need reasonable fitness. The last part is steep and rocky
- Ages 12 and up
- I lend headlamps for the way down
- Bring proper shoes with good grip, at least 1 litre of water, a warm windproof top and a snack
- If the wind makes it unsafe, I'll message you to move the date
Guide: Lao
Guiding since 2026I'm Lao, a registered Western Cape tourist guide (WC16708), and I've worked in tourism for over 20 years. Before moving to Cape Town I spent six years in Zimbabwe as a wildlife and ecology guide, working with Allan Savory, and I've guided in the Chimanimani mountains and rafted the Zambezi.
On the mountain I like to talk about the plants, the rock and the history, and give you a few tips for the rest of your trip. I keep groups small and go at your pace. I guide in English and French.
