A rare glimpse into everyday Singapore
We feel very fortunate to have joined Polly’s walk. It was genuinely excellent.
Compared with the familiar tourist routes around Chinatown, this tour gives you something much deeper: a real sense of how Singaporeans live day to day. In Redhill, we hardly saw tourists. We walked among residents, through the market and hawker centre, and could see how neighbours recognise one another, greet each other, shop, eat and socialise as part of everyday life.
Polly has lived in Redhill for many years and is a local Chinese Singaporean herself. It felt less like being led by a guide and more like being welcomed into someone’s own neighbourhood by its host. At the same time, she is an excellent guide: knowledgeable, warm, observant, and happy to answer almost anything we asked.
This is not mainly a tour about the history of Chinese immigrants striving in Singapore, as many Chinatown tours are. Instead, it shows the living reality of a multicultural community: how people live together, how HDB estates and town centres shape daily routines, and how ideas of community and inclusion are put into practice. We learned about local food spots, old businesses that may soon disappear, playgrounds, the history of the estate, the town centre, and nearby Enabling Village.
What impressed us most was that you are not only looking at history—you are seeing Singapore as it is being lived now, and perhaps how it is evolving in the future.
There were historical details too, but they emerged naturally through small encounters and conversations. We were especially lucky to meet Uncle Chieng at his stall without a queue, take a photo with him, and chat with him about his life and his upcoming trip to Australia to visit his daughter. These little moments made the experience feel very personal and unforgettable.
If you are truly interested in local Singaporean life beyond the standard sights, I strongly recommend Polly’s tour.
