Discover Soviet Tallinn: Communist Stories with a Local Guide

  • 2 hours
  • English

Description

Step behind the Iron Curtain with a local guide. From the former KGB headquarters to grand Soviet buildings and the concrete giant of Linnahall, hear real stories about everyday life under communism, and how that past still shapes Estonia today.

Loved by thousands of travellers since 2019.

WHAT YOU'LL SEE:

The former KGB headquarters, Kino Sõprus, the Writers' House, the Russian Embassy and the Soviet-era Linnahall by the sea.

WHAT GUESTS SAY:

"We booked the Communist stories tour with Marko. Excellent tour, highly recommend. Marko gave a brief history of 20th century life in Estonia and particularly Tallinn. Each stop along this tour we learned a little bit more about Estonia’s recent history. The walk was fairly easy. There were stairs at the end of the tour, but these can be optional. A great way to spend a couple of hours in Tallinn. Thanks Marko."

HOW IT FEELS:

Real stories, not a history lecture. Some will surprise you, some are so absurd they'll make you laugh, and all of them help you understand Estonia today. Perfect for history lovers and anyone curious about life behind the Iron Curtain.

LANGUAGE:

This tour is in English.

YOUR GUIDES:

Jonas, Marko or Christopher. All of them live in Tallinn and work only for EstAdventures, a small, locally owned company.

WHERE WE MEET:

Niguliste 2, in front of the Tallinn Tourist Information Centre (not in front of Niguliste Church across the street). Look for our guides holding a blue umbrella, you can't miss us!

WHERE WE END:

Linnahall, about 2 hours later (sometimes 10–20 minutes more, because we never rush). It's a short walk back to the Old Town.

HOW DOES "FREE" WORK?

Booking costs nothing. At the end, you give what you feel the tour was worth, by card or cash. Most guests give €15–50.

Thank you for supporting local guiding!

See you in Tallinn!
