I joined Christian Roberts’ Soviet Tallinn free tour with EastAdventures on Saturday, 25 July at 1:00 PM. We met in front of the tourist information office in Riga . The tour lasted the planned two hours. Itinerary and content The route covered key Soviet-era sites: the former KGB headquarters, the Russian Embassy in Tallinn, and several central residential blocks built during the Soviet period. The guide’s approach was predominantly historical and political, with a critical tone. While informative, I would have preferred a more balanced style with some personal anecdotes and light humour to ease the heavy subject matter. That said, stories about his grandmothers added a welcome human touch. Weather and group management The day began with excellent weather, but within minutes a sudden, heavy downpour turned into a “biblical” storm. Unfortunately, the tour’s management in these conditions was weak: the group scattered, some participants sought shelter, and parts of the itinerary were effectively shortened. Future visitors should be prepared for rapid weather changes and consider bringing waterproof clothing regardless of the forecast. Value for money As a free tour, the value was correct. I left a €10 tip, which is my standard for thematic free tours that meet a reasonable quality level. Recommendation Recommended for visitors interested in Cold War history and Soviet architecture, especially if you appreciate a serious, critical narrative. If you prefer a lighter, more anecdotal style, this may feel a bit heavy. Regardless of your preference, come prepared for unpredictable weather and expect some flexibility in the route if conditions worsen.

This was a fabulous tour led by Markos who took us to the Soviet Cinema, several statues with soviet history, the old KGB torture / prison house, near the sea and more! It was a riveting tour with lots of information and I learnt a lot. Our tourguide was very friendly and was very good and telling the information in an interesting way to capture our attention.

Excellent tour of Tallinn, looking at the Communist era. Talked about the bombing in 1944. Stories of life in the soviet era with some personal stories included.

It was great to find and book this free tour via GuruWalk. Marko was our guide, and that made the whole of a difference. He has a personal family story to tell, which very much resonates with the thematic topic of the tour. Highly recommend!

Mario ,our guide , speaks excellent English ! I can understand 95% of what he said! Very knowledgeable about the history of Estonia ! Not a surprise as he is a high school history teacher!
