After an introduction with much information about the history of Tanzania and specifically on Zanzibar, we walked through several points of interest in the center of Stone Town for three hours. Giklik was an interesting guide and excellent company. With this experience we had a good overview of the city, including places we probably wouldn't have visited on our own.

When my husband and I booked the Giklik free walking tour via Guruwalk, it was low season and we were lucky enough to be the only clients who had booked the tour on that day. So, Chamize, the owner of Giklik tours could pick us up at the hotel to guide as around stone town. While indeed he knows all the numbers, dates and figures we could think of asking, he tailored the tour to our interests: What are the most important sights in stone town everyone should have seen? Where are the places that slaves were kept prior to being sold? What does the design and of the decorated wooden doors tell us? What are the brass knobs on some of the doors for? Where can we find which kind of food? And most importantly since it was the rainy season: What to do when rain sets in? Chamize gave us a good time and we ended the tour booking him for the next day to show us around a spice garden (good experience) and the Mangapwani slave route (better experience). It is heartbreaking to see the cave where slaves were hidden. And it was thrilling to join Chamize through a 20-minute hike (or should I say clamber?) through a cave at the beach! This was definitely our highlight. If you are running out of time we would suggest to hurry through stone town and just set off for the cave at the beach! Just make sure to have as little luggage as possible. :-)
