I am Rafael, your guide, 44 years old and a Berliner since 2003. As a gay man I am very interested in queer history. Based on many books and articles I have worked out an exciting and entertaining tour about the eventful Berlin history of homosexuality.

Tour description

This Homolulu Berlin Tour explores queer role models, activists, and pioneers of the queer movement that began in 19th-century Berlin. We’ll cover milestones such as the world’s first public outing, the first gay activist group, the first Institute of Sexology, the first gender affirming surgery, and the vibrant queer nightlife of the Golden Twenties.

Along the way, we’ll encounter remarkable figures such as Magnus Hirschfeld, Dora Richter, Christopher Isherwood, Cläre Waldoff, Marlene Dietrich, and Anita Berber. Discover surprising stories, including how a police chief supported the gay community at the end of the 19th century and why Berlin "invented homosexuality". The tour includes a visit to the world's second oldest still-operating gay bar, as well as the vibrant venue where women partied hard and searched for a companion for the night. Of course, we won't miss the internationally renowned Club Eldorado on Motzstraße, where the tour concludes.

We meet at Unter den Linden 4, in front of the Neue Wache, next to the benches right of the building (if your back is towards the street). I wear a rainbow coloured Adidas jacket.

The tour takes about 3 hours, ending in Schöneberg at Motzstrasse.

Please bring a bike or scooter!

Berlin is a city best experienced from a bicycle. The city is flat and cycling is not very strenuous. But then Berlin is sprawling, which makes it difficult to walk everything, so the bike is the perfect option. There are many bike providers that you can book via app, here are three options (prices may have changed), e.g.:

-Callabike: “starter” 10€/day https://www.callabike.de/en/cities-berlin

-Next Bike: bike price, 24h max 15€

-Lime/Uber/Bolt: eScooter & ebike: changing offers

By participating in the tour you agree to the General Terms and Conditions (GTC) https://homoluluberlin.de/gtc.

If you want to make a tip/donation at the end of the tour, that’s much appreciated. Depending on what you can afford, 15-20€ is usually what people give.

See you on to have fun on the tour!
