I had the pleasure of joining a walking tour of Catania led by the wonderful Agata, a local guide with an impressive background. Agata, originally from Catania, has a profound knowledge of the city’s history, enriched by her travels and experiences abroad where she learned the touring business. After finishing university, she traveled to several countries, gaining invaluable experience before returning to Catania to start her own flourishing tour business. The tour began at Piazza Università, a beautiful square brimming with history and architectural beauty. Agata’s storytelling brought the past to life, making the ancient stones and buildings speak to us. We then moved on to Piazza Duomo, the heart of Catania, where Agata shared fascinating details about the iconic landmarks, including the stunning Cathedral of Saint Agatha. One of the highlights was our visit to a castle constructed with lava rocks. The unique texture and history of the structure were captivating, and Agata’s explanations made the experience even more enriching. We then strolled along Church Street, aptly named for its numerous historic churches, each with its own story and significance. The vibrant fish market was another unforgettable stop. The bustling atmosphere, combined with Agata’s insights into the local culture and traditions, made it a sensory delight. Lastly, we explored the ruins of the Colosseum, a testament to Catania’s rich Roman history. Throughout the tour, Agata’s deep knowledge and passion for her city were evident. She explained everything in detail, ensuring we understood the historical and cultural contexts of each site. Additionally, considering the scorching July heat, Agata was thoughtful enough to keep us in the shade whenever possible, making the tour comfortable and enjoyable. Overall, this walking tour of Catania was an amazing experience. Agata’s expertise, enthusiasm, and considerate approach made it truly special. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting Catania. It’s an excellent way to delve into the city’s history and culture with a guide who genuinely loves and knows her city.
