Nairobi: Free Guided Tour of Kibera Slum with a Local Social Entrepreneur.
Tour description
Kibera slum is a home to more than 300,000 people living within an area of approximately 3 square Kilometers and located close to 7kms from Nairobi City center. Due to their culture, The community here is vibrant hence worth the visit everyday. The seven (7) stops are as below;
1)Meet your local guide at the Greenhouse Mall and head to the Toi Market, the second-largest open-air market in Nairobi. See where second-hand clothes from Europe, the UK, the USA, China, and more are sold to locals, especially those from Kibera.
2)Next, visit a local children's home that supports needy and vulnerable kids from the slum with food, shelter, and education. Interact with the children, many of whom are orphans or rescued from the streets, and leave a lasting impression.
3)Continue to the Uweza Art Gallery, a unique center that provides a platform for kids and artists from the slum to explore their talent in art. Admire the amazing pieces of art exhibited here.
4)Then, enjoy an aerial view of the slum near Kibera Town Centre, offering a phenomenal perspective of a section of Kibera from an elevated viewpoint near the old Kenya-Uganda Railway line.
5)Visit a local house to discover the arrangement of the (4m × 4m) home and interact with the family to understand and appreciate their way of life.
6)Next, head to Fairview Academy, a local school in the slum, and witness the resilience of children learning despite hardships and limited resources.
7)Finally, visit the Victorious Bone Craft Workshop, a local workshop that recycles cow bones, cow horns, used brass padlocks, and camel bones into ornaments. Learn how they create jobs and conserve the local environment from pollution.
