Diego Muñoz Camargo and the Tlaxcalan Nobility
Tour description
Hey!
I am Iván Corona, from Tlaxcala La Conquistadora. Come with me and discover the historic center of Tlaxcala as described by historian Diego Muñoz Camargo, who lived in the 16th century.
You'll learn about daily life in the city of Tlaxcala in the 16th century, the importance of the market and the cochineal trade, how justice was administered, and other details.
I'll tell you about the form of indigenous government in the viceregal era that allowed the Tlaxcalans broad autonomy within the Spanish Empire, as part of their privileges for their alliance with the Castilians in the conquest of Tenochtitlan.
Finally, I will tell you the story of the early years of evangelization in Tlaxcala, marked by political instability and the rejection of Christianity by some sectors of Tlaxcalan society, the most important opponent being Acxotecatl, the tlatoani of Atlihuetzia.
We'll visit the old parade ground (now Plaza de la Constitución) with its iconic buildings: the Royal Houses, the inn, the prison, the fountain, the pillory, and the gates, and we'll see what they're used for today.
We will also visit the Franciscan convent, now the cathedral of Tlaxcala, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The tour includes a brochure with images of historical codices and paintings that perfectly complement the tour information.
