Originally a translator by trade, my passion for history and culture made me decide to widen my skills and become a tour guide. I am passionate about Asturias which, despite possible appearances to the contrary, is actually where I am from. I love showing people around my home and helping them discover its history, people and traditions. Showing people from around the world my little piece of the “natural paradise” that is Asturias is truly a passion of mine.

Tour description

In this tour we'll discover the history of a vibrant city with a seafaring and exploring past. A place where the modern and the old come together. Explore its medieval trading past, learn about some of its most notable citizens, walk down its medieval streets and discover how its modern and industrial history has shaped it. The tour takes around 2 hours and 2:30 hours and comfortable clothing and walking shoes are recommended.

The tour starts at the docks park (Parque del Muelle) by the fountain on the southern edge of the park (opposite end from the large statue that is located at the tip of the park).

There we will learn about the history of the park and the estuary of Avilés and get an overview of its industrial past and its most famous modern buildings. We will also meet an important "avilesino" and head into what once was the fishing village of Sabugo.

In Sabugo, we will learn about another local and visit the old town and churches. We then bridge the gap to the medieval city of Aviles.

There, we will visit some of the oldest parts of the city and discover what the city was like in its mercantile heyday.

We will then move onto the baroque expansion of the city and see the city hall and some of the most important buildings in the cities. We will move away from the medieval city, pass by an old medieval monastery, and up one of the most emblematic streets of the city.

We will finish at one of the most beautiful parks in Asturias.
