Tour description

We move through the alleys of Shkodra in the spirit of a cultural-historical walk, where past and present engage in a reflective dialogue. The aim of this tour is to make visible those historical, social, and cultural factors that make Shkodra an outstanding urban and intellectual center of northern Albania.

The path leads from the theater to the cathedral, that symbolic place where Pope John Paul II delivered a speech of historical significance in 1993. Along this route, the religious topography/structure of the city is remarkably condensed in a small space: Catholic and Orthodox sacred buildings as well as a mosque exemplify the model of peaceful interreligious coexistence that has developed over centuries.

Deliberately set stopping points allow for a closer look at traditional forms of intangible cultural heritage. Particularly noteworthy is the art of silversmithing, whose craftsmanship and aesthetic principles have been passed down through three generations and remain vibrant to this day.

Another central element of Shkodra's cultural identity is its exceptionally rich history of photography. This visual archive of high documentary and aesthetic value constitutes a unique cultural wealth and provides a profound insight into the city's historical self-perception.
