Discover Streets of Diversity - CULTURAL DIVERSITY, HIDDEN HISTORY, NATURE & more: Madrid beyond the usual stories
- 2 hours and 30 minutes
- English and Spanish
Description
This is not your typical history tour:
Rather than simply following dates, monuments and famous figures, this walk looks at the people, ideas and communities that are often left out of the main narrative, and asks how their encounters, conflicts and contributions have shaped the Spanish society we live in today, and what they can teach us about building a better future here and beyond.
Why choose this tour:
- GO BEYOND DATES, MONUMENTS AND FAMOUS FIGURES.
- A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE: explore the stories and communities often left out of the main narrative.
- PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE: connect Madrid’s history with the social and environmental questions we face today.
- More than sightseeing: DISCOVER HOW HISTORY, ART, SCIENCE, NATURE AND SOCIETY INTERSECT.
- A personal experience: a small-group walk designed for CONVERSATION, CURIOSITY AND REFLECTION.
On this walk, you will:
- Trace Roman, Jewish and Arab Madrid, including a stretch of the old Arab city wall
- Explore the legacy of the Spanish Civil War and 20th-century Human Rights movements
- Discover LGBTQ+ history and refugee stories woven into the city's fabric
- Ask which stories Madrid has chosen to remember — and which it has allowed to fade
- Finish at the Prado Museum and the Royal Botanical Garden, where art meets science, nature and today's environmental and social challenges
Like the mosaics found throughout Spanish architecture and art, these different cultures, ideas and communities form individual pieces of a much larger picture. Rather than treating these as isolated chapters, the tour explores the connections between them, and how cultural exchange, cooperation, conflict and change have shaped Madrid and Spanish society.
The tour concludes between the Prado Museum and the Royal Botanical Garden. Standing between painting and scientific illustration, art and nature, this final stop invites us to reconsider how knowledge has been observed, represented, and shared, and how these ways of seeing continue to shape our understanding of today's social and environmental challenges and the world we live in.
And so I hope that by the end of the tour, you will look at the world around you with slightly different eyes and a more hopeful view of the future.

Guiding since 2026PRO
I am originally from Spain. I travelled to Eswatini and South Africa as a teenager to study, then went to university in England. Since then, I've worked across Madagascar, the Czech Republic, Scotland and other European countries as a sustainability and climate-change communicator. I also work in energy saving, and I'm passionate about trains.
I'm an illustrator of endangered animal and plant species too, connected to my work in biodiversity conservation and the projects I support in Namibia, South Africa, Eswatini and Uganda. If you're interested, you can see some of my artwork here: www.ingozini.com
This tour brings together two things I care deeply about: the cultural diversity I came to value while living in places like Eswatini, and the biodiversity I work to protect.
Where are you from? Do you live near one of the world's biodiversity hotspots? Tell me about it! You might even give me an idea for my next endangered species illustration.
