We begin our tour under the statue of Ban Josip Jelačić, the 19th-century Croatian governor whose name and statue have become inseparable from Zagreb's central square, where we will uncover how the surrounding architecture reflects the city's changing identity, from 19th-century Neoclassicism and Historicism to the monumental architecture from the fascist era and the modernist influences of socialist Yugoslavia.

As we explore the elegant Lower Town, developed during the Austro-Hungarian Empire under Emperor Franz Joseph I, and stroll through Zagreb's famous Green Horseshoe, you will admire magnificent Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque buildings, elegant Art Nouveau facades, and grand public squares that transformed Zagreb into one of Central Europe's most inspiring cities. 

We will discuss the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the World War II Nazi occupation, as well as Josip Broz Tito, the president-for-life of socialist Yugoslavia between 1953 and 1980, a charismatic and controversial figure who managed to keep the country united while maintaining independence from both the Soviet Union and the West.
