Zagreb 2: Modernist Downtown from Art Nouveau to Yugoslav Postmodernism (max. 12 people)

The tour lasts 2 hours
Available in English and Italian

Description

Explore Croatia's capital on my Zagreb 2: Modernist Downtown from Art Nouveau to Yugoslav Postmodernism Walking Tour.

We begin beneath the monumental statue of King Tomislav, Croatia's first king, before exploring the elegant Lower Town, developed during the Austro-Hungarian Empire under Emperor Franz Joseph I.

As we stroll through Zagreb's famous Green Horseshoe, you will admire magnificent Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque buildings, elegant Art Nouveau facades, and grand public squares that transformed Zagreb into one of Central Europe's most inspiring cities.

You will also discover the legacy of Ban Josip Jelačić, the 19th-century Croatian governor whose name and statue have become inseparable from Zagreb's central square, where we will uncover how the surrounding architecture reflects the city's changing identity, from 19th-century Neoclassicism and Historicism to the monumental architecture from the fascist era and the modernist influences of socialist Yugoslavia.

We will discuss the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the World War II Nazi occupation, as well as Josip Broz Tito, the president-for-life of socialist Yugoslavia between 1953 and 1980, a charismatic and controversial figure who managed to keep the country united while maintaining independence from both the Soviet Union and the West.

Join me to experience Zagreb in a way you will never forget.

In accordance with Croatian regulations, the official price of the tour is €1.
