Description

Sofia is not only an ancient Byzantine city, a former Ottoman capital, or an expression of Soviet architecture. Between these different layers of history lies another Sofia, more elegant and often overlooked: the Sofia of the Belle Époque, the last great age of European elegance before the transformations of the 20th century.

During this approximately 2.5-hour walk, we will discover this side of Sofia through its façades, decorative arts, floral motifs, eclectic architecture, and the elegant homes of the city’s bourgeoisie and emerging elite.

We will explore Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard and the Oborishte district, with its villas and diplomatic quarter, marked by embassies and foreign representations.

We will also explore the role of French and Italian architects, artists, craftsmen, diplomats and intellectuals in the modernization of the young Bulgarian capital and its connections with Paris, Milan, Turin and Venice.

The aim is not simply to see monuments, but to understand how Sofia opened itself to Europe and created its new identity.

I’m passionate about Art Nouveau, architecture and design. I grew up between Italy and France, with strong connections to Milan and Rouen in Normandy, and I speak Italian, French and English. I want to help Italian- and French-speaking travellers discover a lesser-known side of Sofia. Together, we’ll explore how Italian and French architects, artists, craftsmen, diplomats and intellectuals contributed to the transformation of Sofia after the Ottoman period and to the city’s Belle Époque. For me, discovering a city means looking beyond its monuments and uncovering the stories and connections that shaped it.
