Description

Budapest Castle District Tour

In this 3-hour tour, we'll cross to Buda to explore the Castle District, one of Budapest's oldest neighborhoods. We'll visit Matthias Church, Fisherman's Bastion, and Buda Castle, the traditional home of Hungarian monarchs, tracing the area's history from medieval origins through Habsburg rule.

A Storied Landscape
First settled in the 13th century by people fleeing Mongol attacks, this strategic hilltop offers sweeping city views. Drawing on the stories of Buda's royal families, we'll trace the city's narrative from the medieval and Ottoman eras to Maria Theresa and Franz Joseph. We'll start with Danube panoramas near Fisherman's Bastion, then visit Matthias Church, traditionally the German community's church, and the Mary Magdalene Tower, all that remains of the Hungarian community's church. If the liturgical calendar allows, we'll step inside Matthias Church to see its colorful, playful decor. We'll also seek out lesser-known houses, gates, and windows tied to notable residents.

Buda Castle: More Than Folklore and Fairytale
At sites like the Lion's Courtyard, we'll see how the castle is a complex, now housing the Budapest History Museum and more, rather than a single building. Its symbolism and geopolitical role defy fairytale stereotypes.

You'll leave with a richer understanding of Buda's history, from community to politics to religion.
