Steps Through Time: The Heart of Galata Tour
Tour description
Today, we’ll explore a neighborhood shaped by bankers, sailors, architects, artists, and everyday Istanbulites who helped make this area a true crossroads of the world.
Our tour begins along Banker’s Street, once the beating financial heart of the Ottoman Empire, before we climb the elegant Camondo Stairs a gift of the influential Camondo family whose legacy still shapes the district’s character. We’ll pause by the historic British Seaman’s Hospital, a quiet reminder of Galata’s maritime past, and then make our way toward the iconic Galata Tower, the neighborhood’s timeless sentinel watching over the Golden Horn.
From there, we’ll stroll up the lively spine of the city—Istiklal Street—discovering architectural gems and hidden stories tucked inside places like the atmospheric Syria Passage, the beloved Church of Saint Anthony of Padua, and the glittering Flower Passage, once home to florists and now a gathering point for Istanbul’s meyhane life.
We’ll finish near Galatasaray High School, one of the oldest and most prestigious educational institutions in Turkey, marking the point where history and modern Istanbul meet.
Let's uncover the secrets, stories, and soul of Galata—one street, tower, and passageway at a time.
