Valencia in Full: The Most Comprehensive Free Tour of Valencia's Old Town

The tour lasts 3 hours and 30 minutes
Available in English

Description

There's a reason this tour lasts 3 and a half hours.

It's not that the old town's very big. If you're short on time, there are some excellent tours covering it in 2 hours or less.

But if you ask me, Valencia deserves more than that.

On this tour, we'll take our time and dig a little deeper. Most importantly, I'll weave in the bigger story of Valencia that ties everything together: how it developed throughout different stages of its history, what happened, and why. This is a chance to really understand Valencia, rather than just a quick overview.

A Few Highlights:

* How 500 years of Muslim rule shaped Valencia — and left a lasting legacy
* Christian conquest & explosive rise as one of Europe's richest cities
* After the Golden Age — crises and decline
* War, dictatorship & revival — the road to modern-day Valencia
* The story of the bat and why it's everywhere
* The river that's not a river
* What makes authentic paella and where to try it
* Why 'Esmorzaret' is better than brunch

So What's the Tour Like?

First and foremost, it's meant to be fun.

You're here to enjoy yourself and I'll do my best to keep you entertained. The tone is lighthearted, and I focus mainly on storytelling rather than throwing lots of dates, facts and architectural details at you.

Here's why this tour is different:

Going Deeper

By taking a little longer, I can provide a much more comprehensive tour, with more detailed explanations and more stories.

We won't enter any buildings, but we'll see the old town's main monuments from the outside. I'll explain what everything is, the story behind it and why it's important. As we go, we'll explore different periods of Valencia's history and see how they connect to the city you see today. I'll also share some of the most interesting stories and legends from Valencia's past, and discuss local culture, including the most important traditions and festivals.

Relaxed Pace

Not slow — we just don't have to rush. It's much nicer that way.

Questions

I love questions, and it's important to have the time to answer them properly. Whatever you want to know, please ask away.

A Break

We'll stop halfway through for a short rest, a drink and a chat.

Food and Drink

I love Valencian and Spanish cuisine. Food is a big part of why I ended up here. It also played a huge role throughout Valencia's past and is an important part of its modern identity.

As a visitor, some of the most useful advice you can get is food-related. That's what I always want when I travel. But everyone is different, so I tend to recommend different places to different people. Talk to me as we go along, and I'll give you some personalised tips about what to try and where to try it.

A Personal Touch

Beyond the tour, I'm happy to give advice on how to make the most of your stay here. One of the big advantages of a longer tour is having more time to get to know you, so I'll have an idea of what you'll like. If you have any questions about things to do in Valencia or are looking for ideas, just let me know.

The tour is designed to be relaxed, friendly and personal. My hope is you'll feel like you've been shown around by a friend.

Hi, I´m Duncan. From Scotland originally & Official Tour Guide in Valencia since 2011. What am I like as a guide? I´m a native English speaker, and fairly easy to understand for a Scotsman. I love to travel, and prefer longer, slower-paced tours with lots of interesting stories. So that´s what I´ll aim to do for you. Expect in-depth explanations rather than rhyming off dates and facts about buildings. Want advice on things to do in Valencia? No problem. During the tour I like to chat, get to know you, and recommend things I think you´ll like. I find Valencian and Spanish history fascinating, and have a great passion for the food of my adopted homeland. If you want to hear all about Valencia´s history and get some great food recommendations, I´m your man.
