Gastronomic tour in downtown Mérida
Exploring a market in Mérida is like immersing yourself in an explosion of colors, aromas, and, of course, the unmistakable Yucatecan accent. The ideal place for this is the Lucas de Gálvez Market, the vibrant heart of the historic center. We begin our tour in the fruit and juice aisle, ordering a delicious pitcher of chaya, pineapple, or pitahaya water (if it's in season). We continue to the lunch counters, where we'll sample delicious panuchos and salbutes while watching the skillful mestizo women hand-making tortillas. We move on to the street food area to taste some tasty chaya empanadas with Edam cheese. The contrast between the crispy dough, the fresh herbs, and the salty touch of the cheese is simply spectacular. We finish in the sweets aisle to try the classic papaya and cheese candy, coconut candies, and the "caballero pobre" (a type of sweet bread), and don't forget a box of sapotitos (small sapotes) for your trip.
