Behind the Black Capes: Coimbra University, UNESCO and Student Traditions

  • 1 hour and 30 minutes

Description

Have you noticed that Coimbra students wear black? There’s a story behind it...

I’m a local from Coimbra and a former student of the university, so I’ll take you behind the black capes and into the traditions, stories and student culture that make Coimbra unique.

In this 90-minute walking tour, we’ll explore the University of Coimbra, Alta and Sofia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while discovering the fascinating world that has grown around the university for centuries.

Why do students wear black? What exactly is “Praxe”? Why do students tear their academic capes? What really happens during the legendary parties? And why is Coimbra’s Fado so different from Lisbon’s?

Along the way, we’ll discover the stories behind the Iron Gate, the University, the Old Library, Fado, Serenata, academic traditions and student rituals, including some wonderfully crazy ones.

This isn’t just a tour of an old university. It’s a glimpse into the world behind Coimbra’s black capes.

I’m from Coimbra, and the University has been part of my life in more ways than just being one of the city’s most famous landmarks. I studied here, experienced student life, and know how much of Coimbra’s character comes from the people, traditions and stories that surround the university.
