Tour description

Cross the downtown of Lisbon, follow the old medieval walls, and enter Mouraria and Alfama, the oldest neighborhoods of the city that survived almost intact to the great earthquake of 1755, the birthplaces of Fado, where the true multicultural colors of Lisbon show up, ending up at some of the best sightseeing overlooks in Lisbon. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, we end near the famous flea market held on those days. :)

    Meeting point and introduction to the tour's route. This square was a hippodrome during the Roman period. During the Inquisition period both an Hospital and the Palace of the Inquisition operated on this square till both were destroyed by the big Earthquake in 1755.

    Major church edified in the 13th century. Place of the Jewish massacre that occurred in 1506 and nearby there are several memorials regarding this sad episode. The church suffered damage during major earthquakes and a fire and still bears the marks which makes this visit a very unique event.

    Sé Catedral de Lisboa

    The Cathedral of Saint Mary Major, often called Lisbon Cathedral or simply Sé de Lisboa, is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Lisbon. Built in 1147, the cathedral has survived many earthquakes and has been modified, renovated and restored several times and it is nowadays a mix of different architectural styles.

After a 20th-century renovation, it became the headquarters of the José Saramago Foundation.

Great tour, learned a lot of history. The Fado song that she sang to us was a wonderful and welcome surprise!! We walked streets we never would have discovered on our own. Must enjoyable experience! Completely recommend.

I would rate this tour 6 out of 5. Luis is a great story teller and brought a theartical spin to his presentation which was logical, engaging and full of accurate detail. He brought the past to life for us. The sip of liquor toward the end was a great touch and got us up the last bit of hill. Thank you Luis.
