Free walking tour of the old town
Tour description
WOW! There is a guru in Civitavecchia! And if you wish, it will put you on the track of the history of this Old City, this is actually the meaning of the word Civitavecchia (Civita = City, Vecchia = Ancient).
Exploring the main sites and attractions of Civitavecchia, you will walk through the almost 2000 years of its history , from the Roman period to the Middle Ages, from the Renaissance to the Second World War.
Surprisingly, the start of this free tour will be led by a samurai named Tsunenaga ! His statue is located at the entrance to the port to commemorate his visit to the city more than 400 years ago, but to symbolize the international character of the port and its vocation for cultural and commercial exchange. Walking through the ruins of the ancient Roman port you can see real life scenes of fishermen on the quayside selling their freshly caught fish. After admiring some other attractions of the port, such as a fortress completed by Michelangelo (Forte Michelangelo), a fountain designed by Vanvitelli and the city walls , you will be taken to the picturesque center of the city.
Here you will visit interesting places, churches and monuments. But also a hidden gem: that is a private apartment in which there is a room decorated with paintings designed by the great Raphael! Leaving the center through narrow streets we will return to the starting point: the statue of the Samurai; "Say ようなら、またね! (Sayonara, kill you!)."
