About the tour

WOW! There’s a Guru in Civitavecchia! And if you want he will put you on the tracks of the history of this Old City, that is actually the meaning of the word Civitavecchia (Civita=City, Vecchia=Old).

Exploring the main sites and attractions of Civitavecchia, you will retrace the almost 2000 years of its history, from the Roman period to the Middle Ages, from the Reinassance to World War II.

Surprisingly enough the start of this free walking tour will be given by a Samurai named Tsunenaga! His statue stands at the entrance to the harbour to remind his visit to the city more than 400 years ago, but to symbolize the international character of the port and its vocation to cultural and commercial exchanges. Passing through the ruins of the old Roman port you can observe scenes of real life of fishermen at the docks selling the freshly caught fish.

After admiring some other attractions in the port, such as a Fortress completed by Michelangelo (Forte Michelangelo), a fountain designed by Vanvitelli and the city walls, you will be led to the picturesque city centre. Here you will visit interesting places, churches and monuments. But also a hidden gem: that is a private apartment in which there is a room decorated with paintings designed by the great Raphael! Leaving the centre through narrow alleys we will be back to the starting point: the statue of the Samurai; so ” さようなら、またね!(Sayonara, mata te!)”, see you soon!

Places that we will visit in this free walking tour:

-Statue of Hasekura Tsunenaga

-Roman Port

-The Old Stronghold

-Vanvitelli Fountain

-Michelangelo Fortress

-Cathedral of St. Francis

-City centre

-Raphaelesque paintings
