Literary Lisbon- looking through the eyes of the great writers of Portugal.

This tour isn't about castles or viewpoints. It's about the writers who turned these particular streets into literature, and who, in one case, turned Lisbon into a hundred different people. We shall explore the history of Lisbon through the eyes of literary greats like Fernando Pessoa (and his hundred heteronyms) and Luis Camôes, who wrote the epic poem Os Lusiadas about Vasco de Gama's sailing journey to India in the late 15th century. Starting from Rossio Sq. we shall start through the Baixa area and then into Chiado where we'll visit the oldest bookstore in the world, established in 1732 and stop for a coffee at a Brasileira café where Fernando Pessoa used to hang out and where his statue is located. Then on to Praça de Luis Camôes followed by Largo de São Carlos and Largo do Carmo (important wrt both the big earthquake of 1755 and the Carnation Revolution of 1974. Then an optional addition of Largo Barão de Quintela to see the bronze memorial of Eca de Queirós, the great 19th century realist novelist (Os Maias).
