Hands-Free Lycabettus Hike: Unexpected Spots & Panoramic Views
Free walking tour in Athens, in the morning, starting at 09:00, in October 2026: Dexameni Square and Lycabettus Theater.
- 2 hours and 30 minutes
- English
Description
Start your day right with an alternative urban hike up to one of the highest viewpoints in all of central Athens. As someone who has spent years getting to know the city’s ins and outs through daily running, I will act as your human GPS, so you can simply relax, take in the views, and connect with the city without having to consult a map.
See how the city gradually reveals itself as we ascend through the pine and cypress forests covering the slopes of Lycabettus. We will approach the summit from its less-travelled flank to get an up-close view of the legendary Lycabettus Theater as well as many other lesser-known attractions. After taking in a 360-degree view of the Attic basin from the summit, we will descend along the scenic southern ridge to catch a few final surprise vantage points.
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND
- NB: Pace will be adjusted to suit everyone but good physical fitness is a must.
- Specs: 7 km (4.3 miles) with a total elevation gain of ~150-200 meters (500-650 feet) over stairs, steep uphill sections, and dirt paths.
- Gear: Comfortable shoes and a bottle of water.
- Duration: 2-2.5 hours
LOGISTICS & AMENITIES
- Amenities: We will pass several local kiosks on the way. Public restrooms and refreshments are also accessible at the summit.
- Ending point: The hike concludes near where we started. Depending on what you’re up for, I can either lead you straight back to our starting point or direct you to one of the area’s many excellent local cafes to unwind after our trek.

Guiding since 2026I'm a private English tutor based in Athens. In my free time, I spend hours outside, running, hiking, or otherwise exploring the city. And what I keep on discovering, month after month, year after year, is that Athens is a treasure trove of all kinds of things, not just ancient ruins. There's the quirky shop signs, the unexpected natural locations, and, of course, the highly diverse yet somehow very coherent architecture.
Athens is the modern, the old, and the ancient all blended into one incredibly layered substance. When I'm out and about, I often find myself asking: What's behind this layer? What hides in here? How did this get here?
I'm not an expert, I'm just curious. And I would love to share my curiosity with you.
What to expect on my tours:
- Exploration over lecturing: We focus on the questions that come up naturally and where they might lead us.
- Genuine discussion: I want this to be a sharing experience. I'm just as eager to hear how you experience the city, what your intuition tells you, and what you want from your visit.
- Local insights: Of course, as a resident, I know a thing or two and am eager to share it.
Athens is one of the most photogenic cities I've ever known. It's a city that keeps on giving. Depending on the time of day, the season, or your mood, it opens up in entirely different ways. And to me, it's always beautiful.
When you look at Athens from above, you naturally feel an urge to zoom in and discover. So I want to take you up to some of my favorite viewpoints so you can see the city from above and maybe fall in love with it the way I once did.
