Dear all! This tour is focused on history, art & cultural heritage of Berat. I will show you top places to visit in my city.

Our meeting point will be in city centre, just at the square in front of Saint Demetrius Cathedral. Is very easy to recognise me, I have a badge with guruwalk logo. After introduction, we are going to the most photographed part of Berat, at the view point of Mangalemi’s quarter. After wondering the old quarter of Mangalemi, we will visit the old bridge of Gorice and the old quarter of Gorice.
The next stop is the Medieval center which consists of the Helvetic Tekke and the King's Mosque.
Next, we visit the renovations of the complex of houses belonging to the Pasha of Berat. Then we go up to the castle, to see the city's point of view, then the church of Saint Mary Vllahernes, the Church of Saint Trinity, the Red Mosque, the water cistern, the Acropolis, and the Onufri Museum (optional).

The museum ensemble of the Mangalem district is spread in the shape of a semiarch on the southern and eastern part of the castle hill. This residential complex may have been one of the first to represent the development of the medieval city outside the fortification walls during the century XV-XVI thus forming the varosh area. The unique and original architecture of the houses seems to belong mainly to the construction phase of the century. XVIII-XIX with the combination of stone and wood elements.
The ensemble of the Gorica neighborhood takes place in the lower part of a hilly height, which is crowned at the top with a fortification from the ancient period. Berat Castle (Albanian: Kalaja e Beratit), also referred to as the Citadel of Berat and castle quarter, is a fortress overlooking the town of Berat, Albania. It dates mainly from the 13th century and contains many Byzantine churches in the area and Ottoman mosques. It is built on a rocky hill on the left bank of the river Osum and is accessible only from the south. It is situated at an elevation of 214 metres (702 ft).
The castle of Berat was one of the most difficult castles to be taken during several wars. The defense system was very strong. There have been 24 towers, sorrounding the castle with 24 hours of high vigilance. And this one that we are going to visit is the biggest one. There we’re going to have a 360° view of the city from up. Beautiful panorama, ideal for taking wonderful pictures.
The byzantine church of St Mary of Blachernae is the oldest church of the castle, from 13th century. Is fully painted with afrescoes from 16th century, painted by Nicholaos, son of Onufri, part of the school of Berat dedicated for painting the churches. This church had also a water cistern, for saving water from the rain for the monks who were living at the old monastery located near the church.
The Water Cistern, known as Saranxha by the locals, is a water collection structure that dates back to the 12th century, but which today remains a ruin. The construction style and the large structural volume make it one of the most interesting objects in the center of the Berat fortress, in the highest part of the Acropolis.
The Bachelors Mosque is a monument of the first category with numerous architectural values and represents a high achievement in the level of construction of cult objects in the city of Berat. It is located on the lower side of the Mangalem neighborhood and was built at the beginning of the XIX century.
It must have been built in the year 1600. Teqeja e Helvetive, is a monument which represents one of the best achievements of architecture in the city of Berat. Teqeja was built in the 15th century and rebuilt by Ahmet Kurt Pasha at the end of the 70s of the 18th century and belongs to the Helvetic sect, which is one of the sects of Islam and serves a certain group.
The Red Mosque is one of the oldest preserved mosques in the city of Berat. The construction technique used for the walls of the building is that of clapboarding. Dating the mosque presents difficulties. According to the construction technique and its location, it is thought to have been built at the beginning of the 15th century. The mosque served the caravans coming from east to west and later served the Turkish garrison.
The church of Holy Trinity from XIV century, is one of the most beautiful byzantine churches of Balkan. This church respect all the architectonical details of byzantine empire, with the tecnique of stones and bricks. This church is the symbol of the churches of Berat.
