My nickname is Zonge, based in Cambridge, and I specialize in the city's rich history, from its Roman roots to its prominent role in global academia. In my tours, I offer insights into its transformation from a rural village to a global research center. I'm a mountain enthusiast with a deep love for the Dolomites in Italy. I explore similar landscapes wherever I can, despite limited opportunities in Southeast England. I'm also a history buff, regularly engaging with historical media. I believe in giving back through platelet donations and volunteering. I'm eager to connect and learn more about you. Cheers!
Hello there!
Are you a history and archaeology enthusiast, or simply curious about the human past? Well, I share your passion, and I'm excited to take you on one of my tours.
During our journey, you'll have the opportunity to explore the Hill beneath which the origin of Cambridge lies, and the original location of the "Bridge over the Cam" (Cambridge) from the time when Roman legions were stationed here. We'll see one of the United Kingdom's four oldest surviving round churches and stroll by the iconic gates of St. John's College and Trinity College (the rivals, the wealthy, the prestigious). If possible, we'll even step into the beautiful Trinity College paddocks.
As we continue, you'll be captivated by the breathtaking King's College Chapel on the famous corner of the Backs, and I'll share the intriguing stories of its connection to the Wars of the Roses. We'll discuss the legendary Mathematical Bridge and how it became a symbol of Cambridge. You’ll also learn about the relationship between a pub and laboratory that left a mark on our modern world. You’ll understand what colleges are and explore why these unique institutions exist.
This 90/100-minute journey promises not only knowledge but an enjoyable experience. Be prepared for a bit of rain and some puddles, as we explore this extraordinary city together. Please note that access to structures is not guaranteed, and I recommend using the restroom facilities before the tour begins.
I'm eager to guide you through the centuries in this remarkable city.
Important: This tour is pet-friendly, and nearly every part of the route is accessible for wheelchairs. However, there are a few spots, such as the beginning, where stairs and slopes might pose a challenge for wheelchairs. Please also monitor communications via GuruWalk chat, as there may be updates. Failing to check for them could potentially result in missing the tour.
Just a heads-up before you book!
Cheers.
The tour starts on the top of Castle Mound (Castle St, Cambridge CB3 0RG, United Kingdom - please google the exact location), where we will have a beautiful overview of the city. I wear a safari hat. Be advised that the map displayed on the icon may not be updated. Please access Google Maps, to accurately determine the correct location.
When possible, we will access Trinity College paddocks
Free tours do not have a set price, instead, each person gives the guru at the end of the tour the amount that he or she considers appropriate (these usually range from €10 to $50 depending on satisfaction with the tour).
