Ruins, Romance & Red Wine: Free Walking Tour of Heidelberg Castle
- 1 hour and 30 minutes
- English
Description
You've seen the castle from the Old Bridge. Now walk inside its walls and find out why it looks the way it does.
Heidelberg Castle isn't one building. It's a patchwork built over centuries by different prince electors, then blown up, rebuilt, struck by lightning and finally abandoned. On this small-group tour we follow that story from fortress to palace to romantic ruin.
What we'll see:
The West Wall: a 98-foot-thick wall built when Ludwig V turned the castle into a fortress, with cannons aimed at France
The Elizabeth Gate: the 19th-birthday gift that was "assembled overnight," with its hidden animals, and the love story of Friedrich V and Elizabeth Stuart that ended with the Winter King
The courtyard buildings: Otto Heinrich's building with its Renaissance carvings, Friedrich's building with its crooked statue, and Rupert's building, the oldest of them, each with its own scandal
The Great Barrel: why a prince elector built a barrel holding almost 300,000 bottles of wine, and the jester Perkeo who guarded it
The Knight's Leap: the legend and the footprint
The terrace: views over the Old Town and the Neckar, and the border with France in the distance
You'll leave knowing why Mark Twain and Victor Hugo were captivated by these ruins, and why the French wanted to destroy them.
Good to know: The castle ticket is separate from the tour. The interior rooms are not part of this tour. Entry is at your own expense, and I'll help you get tickets on the day.

Guiding since 2025PRO
I'm an international student in Heidelberg who genuinely fell for this city the moment I arrived. From walking around the Old Town to spending too many evenings in its historic breweries, I've built up a local's feel for a place that still surprises me.
I've spent time guiding visitors through Heidelberg professionally, so I know how to bring the history alive, but what makes this tour different is that I'm sharing it as someone who actually lives here, studies here, and sees the city fresh every day.
I speak multiple languages and have guided guests from all over the world, so whether you're a solo traveller, a couple, or a group, you'll feel right at home. Come with questions, the stranger the better :-)
