What an insightful way to learn what it means to be Sowetan! We took this tour with Mxolisi after touring SA for 2 weeks and visited other major sights (Cape Town; Joburg CBD; Pretoria; Durban; Drakensberg; Clarens) and glad we got to have an immersive journey into SA’s complex history and its vibrant present. This bike tour offered a glimpse into a community that was the heart of the anti-apartheid struggle and is now a thriving urban center. We encountered warm and welcoming locals as we cycled through the township, and my boyfriend and I felt very safe the entire time. We also got to chat with locals from different parts of Soweto over a beer or two. The bike tour also covered important landmarks as well as the outside of Mandela House museum. Modest cycling experience is required. Mxolisi was great at managing the traffic to ensure we are always safe on the road. He was also very knowledgeable, open minded, and friendly, which made the tour itself felt like you are cycling through his neighborhood with a friend.

Exploring Soweto by bicycle is a whole different level — you get to experience the streets, the people, the history and the energy in such an authentic, local way. 🚲 Our guides were not only super knowledgeable, but also fun, warm and extremely helpful. They made us feel safe the entire time and shared stories that we would have never found on our own. We truly enjoyed every moment and we’re so happy that we left Soweto with new friendships. If you really want to connect with Soweto beyond the usual tourist spots, this is the way to do it! El tour en bicicleta por Soweto me gustó muchísimo; el recorrido fue tranquilo, los guías fueron muy amables y explicaban todo de forma clara. Hicimos una parada para tomar una cerveza en un bar local y otra para probar comida típica que estaba muy buena. Pedalear fue una manera relajada y diferente de descubrir la historia y el ambiente del lugar. Es una actividad que realmente recomiendo para conocer Soweto de una forma cercana y agradable.
The tour was incredible. The guides are very nice and know how to share their knowledge in an accessible way. You can experience the daily life of the neighborhood and interact with locals. I highly recommend it.
