I had a great tour through Soweto with Thabo! He was able to answer all my questions and gave me a great insight into the history of Soweto. Getting the perspective of a local who grew up in Soweto makes the tour really unique. I can totally recommend the tour to everyone who wants to visit Soweto.

I loved this tour with Thabo as he is capable of giving his personal story growing up in this particular neighbourhood whilst seeing the highlights as Mandela house…

Thabo was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions related to SOWETO. We are an older couple and he was very considerate and took great care of us. Overall, my husband and I had a wonderful SOWETO experience with Thabo!

The communication with Bo prior to our tour was great. Sean was a friendly and knowledgeable guide who answered all of our questions with confidence. We were able to use our credit card to tip which was handy. One thing to note is that this tour is only 1 hour long and doesn't cover a large area, but it gives you a good understanding and feel for Newtown.

We had the pleasure to be Thabo’s first tour. We did a big tour on foot through Soweto, went Bungee Jumping and visited a few museums. Why we chose Thabo though was because he was a local and not your typical tour guide. He told is all about his first hand experiences, what life is like living in Soweto, growing up here, where he went to school, how people’s attitudes to police have changed over time etc. He took us along main roads as well as side roads he knew were safe and offered a glimpse of how people live here. All of this is stuff you don’t get on normal tours that are fact based - for that we read through Wikipedia articles and watched some videos before we went. I can highly recommend the tour.

I received a warm welcome in the office by Bo and then enjoyed the small tour around downtown. Ivan was an amazing guide, knows a lot and is super fun as a person.

Best things to do and see in Johannesburg

Although Johannesburg is not the capital of the South African country, you wouldn’t notice it as its diversity and its densely populated urban metropolis make up for this to make it a truly amazing place to visit. At the southern tip of the African continent, this city enjoys a pleasant climate that makes it perfect for exploring the iconic landmarks and archeological sites that make it so famous. Even though there are traces of humans inhabiting this area for many centuries, the official city of Johannesburg was founded on a small farm where gold was discovered in 1886. Strike gold during your vacation by doing a free walking tour with GuruWalk.

If you do a free walking tour in Johannesburg, you’ll have the chance to visit the city’s most iconic landmarks and get to see some of its hidden charms. Visit the Apartheid Museum, walk over to Nelson Mandela Square or visit the Mandela House Museum, and then see Constitution Hill, or see the views at the Carlton Centre skyscraper. The Johannesburg Art Gallery is where you can feast your eyes and then you can check out the Maboneng Precinct, a hip neighborhood that has something for everyone. Just outside of the city, you can visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Cradle of Mankind and be amazed.

A great way to get to know which tour is best for your interests is by reading up on the reviews and ratings about both the route and the tour guide in Johannesburg posted by other tourists on the GuruWalk platform. These tours are available in different languages and are also scheduled in the morning, afternoon, and evening.
