Hello travelers! We are a group of guides happy to live and work in Budapest! With degrees in History of Art and Tourism. And after years of experience in the city, we have come up with the recipe for the perfect free tour: INGREDIENTS: -300 grams of history (just enough so that you don't get saturated) -150 grams of legends -several tablespoons of curiosities, gossip and news - "salt shaker" to the taste of the guide -A handful of tricks so that you learn to move around the city - A guide wanting to enjoy yourself - A motivated public PREPARATION: We start by adding the 300 grams of history, because every tour has to start with a good historical context. But immediately we add 150 grams of legends to the mixture in small doses and stir well until a well-homogeneous and balanced dough is left. Let it rest and add salt to taste until you start to hear a few laughs. That is the signal that tells you that the mix is on the right track. It is then the right time to add several spoonfuls of curiosities, gossip and current affairs, always at the request of the diner. All this is put in the oven for 2 and a half hours at maximum power. And to avoid that the dough does not drop, go adding tricks and recommendations. If the steps have been followed well, we assure you a good free tour. And if the recipe is also made in Budapest, success is guaranteed!

ITINERARY

  • 🍽️ Central Market

We'll begin the tour by exploring one of Budapest's culinary temples: the Central Market Hall. Amidst colorful stalls and intense aromas, we'll tell you about the most typical Hungarian dishes: mangalica pork, goose foie gras, paprika... and much more! We'll stop here for anyone who wants to try something (not included in the price).

  • 🍷 Váci Utca and culinary tradition

We'll stroll down one of the city's most famous streets, lined with restaurants. We'll talk about essential dishes like goulash and lángos, wines like Tokaj, and liqueurs like pálinka. We'll also discover interesting culinary customs from everyday Hungarian life.

  • 🍰 Kürtőskalács: the sweet fireplace

We'll stop at a traditional bakery that makes kürtőskalács, the oldest Hungarian sweet. You can buy one if you'd like to try it freshly made, while we tell you why all the tourists fall in love with it.

  • Flavors of the communist era

We'll take a break to tell you how food changed during the Soviet regime, how ration cards worked, and what the most popular dishes and drinks were at that time.

  • 🍽️ House of Katalin Karády

At this point, we'll talk about Jewish cuisine. You'll learn who this actress, considered "Righteous Among the Nations," was and how she saved hundreds of lives during the Holocaust... while we explain what kosher food is and what traditional dishes are prepared for the Sabbath.

  • 📖 Bohemian area: Café Central and Galerías París

We'll conclude the tour in the cultural heart of 19th-century Budapest. We'll tell you why this area was the center of bohemian life, how the legendary literary cafes emerged, and what sweet treats were favorites of high society. And of course, you'll take home recommendations for great food for the rest of your trip.

🔸 Note : Tastings are not included, but there will be several stops along the tour where you can eat or drink on your own, depending on what you'd like.
