Free tour a walk through Muslim Valencia
Tour description
Did you know that Muslims were in Valencia for almost 900 years? Amazing, right?
On this tour we will get to know the vestiges of the 11th century that still remain from the Muslim era within the current Barrio de El Carmen . In addition, you will discover why in Valencia you cannot see any mosque or any other type of similar building with Arab architecture of the time.
We will begin the visit in the current La Almoina square, right in what was the center of the ancient city of Balansiya.
From there, crossing the Plaza de La Virgen , we will reach the outskirts of the old Muslim city next to the Torres de Serrano and we will discover the importance of the Turia river and the ditches that channeled the river's water.
Later, in what was the old suburb of Roteros, we will talk about the organization of the Arab city and how the Muslim society based on family clans influences the design of the labyrinth of streets and alleys that exists today.
We will continue our visit through narrow streets and squares along the sections that remain of the imposing wall and that are interspersed with watchtowers over 14 meters high.
Later on, along Calle de los Caballeros we will arrive at the Galería del Tossal where we will visit one of the most important archaeological centers of the city at the time.
Then through the Plaza de San Jaime we will enter the area known as La Morería (Muslim ghetto) where after the Christian conquest by Jaime I of Aragon in 1238 d. C., the Valencian Saracens lived for more than three centuries until their expulsion from Spain in 1609.
We will end the tour next to the picturesque Mossen Sorell market.
