Tour description

Join Alex on a Harlem history tour and follow the neighborhood from the American Revolution to the Harlem Renaissance, and beyond.  We’ll learn how the area transitioned from German, Jewish, and Italian, to America’s most influential Black community.

We’ll visit famous churches, theaters, mansions, and some of NYC’s finest residential architecture.  We’ll also discuss events and places considered central to Black identity in the United States, like the Harlem Cultural Festival and the iconic Apollo Theater.

Eventually, we’ll arrive in “Little Senegal”, NYC’s largest West African community. We’ll talk about contemporary West African migration to the United States, visit several local markets, and meet some business owners in the neighborhood.

Along the way, you'll have plenty of opportunities to engage and ask questions.

Tours are casual, flexible, and fun, so bring your curiosity and a comfortable pair of walking shoes!

Me ha encantado conocer el barrio de Harlem y toda su historia de la mano de Alex. Fue como un paseo por el tunel del tiempo de Nueva York, no sólo de Harlem.

Alex is a very knowledgeable guide who runs the tour in a nice way that one feels comfortable from the first minute. We did a little bit walking in a cold weather but it was totally worth it as I have learnt so many new things about Harlem. What I like the most that he was not just talking about buildings and sights but explaining their importance in the cultural and historical contexts. Definitely I will recommend this tour if you want to see different New York.

This was the first of the two tours we did with Alex that day. We learnt SO much about Harlem from the very beginning to nowadays, there were some welcoming breaks, all our questions could be answered and his way of explaining things were very clear and complete, my mum that had a bit of difficulty with English could understand everything! Also we were running a bit late and Alex kindly sent us his location so we could join them on the way. Thanks again Alex !
