Tour description

Karibu! Welcome to my free walking tour of central Arusha.
Arusha is a very walkable city and pretty calm by Tanzanian standards, making it a great place to tour on foot.

This walking tour should take around 3-4 hours, depending on the pace of our walking. We will cover about 3 kilometers of distance, so comfortable shoes are recommended.

Meeting Point: Clock Tower:

  • 1: National Natural History Museum* (5-minute walk)

Discover Tanzania's geology, flora, and fauna, including its world-famous wildlife.

  • 2: Arusha Declaration Museum and Uhuru Monument* (10-15 minute walk)

Learn about Julius Nyerere and his importance in Tanzania's history, as well as the significance of the Uhuru Monument.

  • 3: Arusha Central Market (5-10 minute walk)

Shop for fresh produce, spices, and other local goods. I grew up on my parent's farm, so I can teach you a bit about agriculture in Tanzania and what we grow locally.

  • 4: Maasai Market (15-minute walk)

View local crafts and meet the local vendors. I will show you how to negotiate in Swahili!

After, I can help you catch a taxi to your hotel. Or, if you wish I would be happy to take extend the tour and take you to one of the following destinations:

  • Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Plantation
  • Maji Moto Chemka Hot Springs
  • Meserani Snake Park
  • Maasai Community and Primary School
  • Meserani Cattle Market (held once a week)

I would love to be your guide around Arusha!

* These destinations are optional and have a nominal entry fee. This fee can vary but is approximately $6 usd per adult.

I had an amazing time on the walking tour in Arusha with Hans. He was super helpful and friendly throughout the journey, making it a really fun experience. One cool thing was when we went to the Masai market. Hans knew a lot about the traditional art there, and he helped me buy a really beautiful piece. He made it easy to talk to the local artists and understand the art's meaning. Hans was also great at the Central Market. He knew all about the different fruits they had there, and he knew the people who sold them. With his help, I got to try some unique fruits and learn about their importance in the area. Hans made shopping for fruit feel like an adventure and learning experience at the same time. Thank you!

Hans was a nice guy. He took me to the local market, where I probably wouldn't have gone alone. However, he should have prepared the tour more and informed me about the entry fees in advance.

I've know Hans for a few years and was excited to hear he was starting to give walking tours. He has always been my go to person for suggestions of things to see and do in Arusha. I went with him on his route with a few other visitors last week and has a great time.
