My name is Jan, I'm 30 years old and I work as a political scientist in my adopted home of Münster. I was born close by, so I know the important streets and alleys to be able to offer you a fantastic stay in Munster. Together we travel through time from the humble beginnings of the Middle Ages through a city that has become quite essential to the western empire with mighty kingdom, revolution, dark days of Nazism, destruction and communist divisions to today - some would call it the trendiest or hottest city in Germany describe . This was truly a spectacular transition not to be missed! I have been giving city tours for 3 years, but switched to the wonderful "free walking tours" 1 year ago because they give me the opportunity to offer smaller groups and thus a much more personal experience.
Join us for a stroll through over twelve centuries of European history embedded in a vibrant and modern city. The square in front of today’s St. Paul’s Cathedral bustles with life, especially on Wednesdays and Saturdays when the vast farmer's market attracts locals and visitors alike.
The adjacent ‘Prinzipalmarkt’ (= ‘main market’), with its picturesque pediments and arcades that had been almost completely destroyed during World War II. It has since been restored to its former glory and once again bears witness to the struggles between merchants and clergy seeking to stake their claim on the city’s fortune.
Following the ubiquitous cyclists down the lively boulevard, we reach the historic City Hall, an outstanding landmark in European History. Hear about the tense and eventful negotiations which took place in this very building before finally resulting in the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. This series of treaties put an end to the Thirty Years' War and shaped the face of Europe as we know it today.
Join us to get a local view of how history becomes a reality.
We are meeting in front of the main entrance of St. Lamberti. There is a main entrance, right below the 3 cages. Just below these cages, you will meet me :)
Free tours do not have a set price, instead, each person gives the guru at the end of the tour the amount that he or she considers appropriate (these usually range from €10 to $50 depending on satisfaction with the tour).
