When you come to explore Ypres as a visitor, you always come across three important pillars: the city has a beautiful medieval past, there is a fortress that is one of the most beautiful in Western Europe, and of course, there is also that sad page of the First World War.
On this walk, we are going to lift a tip of the veil on these three themes.
I have other walks available, check www.beapart.be/guide for the options. The groups can be up to a maximum of 25 people, but you cannot specify this on this booking system. I recommend filling in the maximum (5) and then coordinating further regarding content and group size via message
We start at the fountain on the large market near the Cloth Halls
In the 13th century as an example of its power and wealth, the city of Ypres built its first public buildings in stone. The Ypres cloth hall and the belfry were some of the most impressive civil buildings in Europe at that time. During the First World War, the building was completely destroyed by bombings of the German army. In 1999 the whole complex was recognized as UNESCO World Heritage.
The cathedral is a former Episcopal church in Gothic style reconstructed after the First World War. Bishop Jansenius and Court Robert of Bethune, the ‘Lion of Flanders', are buried here. There is also a beautiful side altar with an altarpiece and the miracle statue of Our Lady of Thuyne. The tower is 100m high and is not open to the public. The Lapidarium contains the old ruins of Saint Martin's deanery.
The Ieper War Victims Monument is dedicated to 155 named civilian and military victims from Ieper/Ypres who died as a result of the 1914-1918 war. There are also 21 names on two plaques dedicated to the later victims who died during the Second World War when Ypres was occupied by German Forces from 1940-1945.
This Anglican church was built in 1928-1929 following the plans of London architect Sir Reginald Blomfield. This ‘Memorial church' holds many reminders of the First World War. Everything down to the furniture was donated by British associations, regiments or individuals. http://www.stgeorgesmemorialchurchypres.com/
The fortresses of Ypres are the best preserved in our country, however they have a turbulent history. Their story begins ten centuries ago, when the city was founded on the Ieperlee. Around 1680, the famous engineer Vauban converted the fortress into a huge complex with fortifications and bastions.
The Menin Gate is het most famous Commonwealth war memorial in Flanders. It was built in a classic style after the design by Sir Reginald Blomfield. It was officially inaugurated in 1927. The gate displays the name of 55 000 soldiers. Because the gate was too small to hold the names of all the missing, there are 35 000 commemorated on the panels of the Tyne Cot Memorial in Passendale. Every evening at 8 pm the Last Post is sounded.
Free tours do not have a set price, instead, each person gives the guru at the end of the tour the amount that he or she considers appropriate (these usually range from €10 to $50 depending on satisfaction with the tour).
